Help us raise awareness of mental health problems by getting involved in our Mental Health Awareness Week campaign.

  • Help us raise awareness of mental health problems by getting involved in our Mental Health Awareness Week campaign. This year’s theme is physical activity and mental health.

Physical activity is defined as any movement of the body produced by our muscles that uses energy. Moderate intensity physical activity requires an amount of effort and noticeably accelerates the heart rate i.e. brisk walking, housework, gardening, walking your dog, playing with your children and domestic chores. Vigorous intensity physical activity requires a large amount of effort, causes rapid breathing and a substantial increase in heart rate, e.g. running, cycling, and climbing briskly up a hill.

Both moderate and vigorous intensity physical activity have been shown to have a range of positive effects for our mental health and well-being. For example in the short term physical activity can lead to more positive moods and increased mental alertness. In the longer term it can increase self-confidence and self-esteem. Participating in physical activity on a regular basis has also been shown to have a protective effect against developing depression, anxiety and dementia.

Have you found physical activity helpful to manage your mental health and well-being? We’d love to hear from you! If you would like to get involved and share your story, drop us a line to press@mentalhealth.org.uk.
