Weight Loss.Fast Food, Obesity and the facts!

Posted by Samantha Rentz on February 19th 2013
  • With obesity on the rise and the dangers to global health R.E.A.L takes a look at the shocking facts

Obviously the amount of calories that we need to fuel our bodies varies and has several factors  to take into consideration depending on your age, gender, and activity level. That said in general a woman needs to consume approximately 2000 calories a day and a man about 2500 calories.

R.E.A.L takes a look a fast food outlets to see their nutritional value and you won’t be surprised to hear that the figures are shocking. In order to not single one particular fast food  chain we have compared  3.

All 3 fast food outlets do provide nutritional information which we thought we would share with you too.

Baring in mind that your daily food intake should consist of 30% fat, 20% of protein and 50% of carbohydrates the following figures are scary!

The 3 fast food chains mentioned do not hide their food’s nutritional content but just how many of us stop to work out what we are putting into our bodies?

  • Lets start with KFC and a link to their nutritional website! So you fancy the following?

KFC Original recipe extra tender chicken, maybe 2 pieces?

  • 260 calories
  • 12g carbohydrate
  • 14g fat

Maybe 1 hot wing too?

  • 350 calories
  • 15g carbohydrate
  • 20g of fat

Some Wedges?

  • 290 calories
  • 35g carbohydrate
  • 15g of fat

Corn on the cob?

  • 70 calories
  • 16g carbohydrate
  • 0.5g of fat

A diet Pepsi?

N/A

Well you’d be delighted to hear that you have just consumed a total of 970 calories, 78g carbohydrate and a massive helping 49.5g of fat!!!!! Almost half your daily calorific needs in one unhealthy meal.

  • Now lets take a look at McDonalds. Fancy the following fast food?

Big tasty burger with bacon?

  • 890 calories
  • 55g of fat
  • 49g carbohydrate

Now some fries?

  • 330 calories
  • 16g of fat
  • 42g carbohydrate

How about a chocolate milkshake?

  • 390 cals
  • 8g of fat
  • 67g carbohydrate

A MASSIVE 1610 calories, 79g of fat, 158g carbohydrate. So how about you just go for nice healthy salad? Maybe a crispy chicken and bacon salad? 380 calories, 19g of fat and 24g carbohydrate..not quite as healthy as you thought and that’s without the dressing!

  • Now lets check out Burger King. How about a nice Bacon Double Cheese burger XL?

  • 955.4 calories
  • 54.8g of fat
  • 51.6g carbohydrate

Medium Fries?

  • 543.4 calories
  • 24.4g of  fat
  • 71.5g carbohydrate

Large Cola?

  • 210 calories
  • 0 fat
  • 53g carbohydrate

A whopping 1708 calories alone! 78 g of fat and 175g carbohydrate.

We are not suggesting that you refrain from the odd fast food meal but next time you think that it is quicker to just take the family out for a meal think about the long term health risks of eating too much junk food on a regular basis!
